Afin de proposer des cours sortant de l’ordinaire et pour favoriser le “team-building”, le Prof. Jon Pearce a demandé à son enseignant, Sifu Steven Macramalla de donner aux étudiants de la SU un cours privé de Kung-fu pour débutant “LVL n00b”.
Sifu Steven Macramalla est l’instructeur principal de l’école Chien Lung, Six Animals Kung-Fu, à Santa Cruz. Il enseigne le style Chien Lung depuis plus de 20 ans. Il détient aussi un doctorat en psychologie cognitive, et enseigne à présent à la San Jose State University.
Pendant deux heures, nous avons eu un bref aperçu des six animaux (trois félins et trois serpents) qui inspirent les formes de ce Kung-Fu. Nous avons expérimenté chaque style à travers des exercices spécifiques. Vous pouvez en apprendre plus en allant sur leur site.
When Dr. Jon Pearce first mentioned about our Kung-Fu class in front of Martin Luther King library, we were ecstatic and fearful at the same. At the start of our Kung-Fu session, our Sifu Chien Lung spent 15 minutes to give us an overview of the history behind the Six Animal Kung-Fu. It was quite interesting to observe when Sifu Chien Lung started live demonstration of Kung-Fu moves by tiger, panther, snow leopard, cobra, python, boa. The characteristics and behaviors of each animal were unique and purposeful to itself.
If there is anything we have learned, watching Kung-Fu is a lot easier than actually performing it. As you can see from the pictures, we all struggled quite a bit trying to kick, spin and focus. It was quite amusing watching the students trying their best Kung-Fu abilities. Instead of looking like fearless warriors, we were practically hopeless. Overall, it was quite a pleasant experience and we really enjoyed it immensely.
Second jour de la Summer University : Après un copieux buffet jamaïcain, le Pr Dr John Pearce et le Pr Dr Stephan Robert nous donnent un speech de bienvenue décontracté, et nous présentent les objectifs de cette Summer University. Parmi eux, le plus important est sans aucun doute la possibilité de se créer un réseau social et professionnel avec des personnes et des entreprises palpitant au même rythme que le centre mondial de la technologie et de l’innovation.
Second day of the Summer University: We kicked off the day with a scrumptious Jamaican Buffet served by the Computer Science department at SJSU. After the lunch, Dr. Jon Pearce and Dr. Stephan Robert presented a welcome address emphasizing the importance and key goals of the Summer University.
Undoubtedly, the most important of them was for the students to network and socialize, making friends and learning from one another. Dr. Pearce then talked briefly about the schedule of classes and the industrial visits planned for the course duration.
The schedule looks tight but guess we will have so much fun too 🙂
Après une grosse journée d’avion et plus de 24 heures sans dormir, nous voici arrivés dans le sanctuaire de la technologie : la Silicon Valley !
Un bus scolaire spécialement affrété nous amène jusque devant le bâtiment où nous dormirons pendant ces trois semaines.
Après une petite balade pour découvrir notre nouveau terrain de jeu, nous allons nous coucher à 20h (!) pour être en forme pour… une journée de congé !
